A plastic tank and a ring of mould
For two years we ran an ultrasonic diffuser on a bedroom shelf. Every few weeks it wanted dismantling and scrubbing, and even clean it never smelled of much more than three feet away. By the time the oil reached the air it was mostly water.
We assumed the good version existed and we simply had not found it. It did not. The powerful machines were commercial units built for hotel lobbies — loud, expensive, sized for a facilities budget. The handsome ones were the same plastic tank in a nicer shell.
So we built the one we wanted. The machine on your table now is the thing we were looking for.
What we ruled out first

No water
Water dilutes the oil and adds damp to a room that may not want it. Temper atomises the oil directly — which is why the scent reaches the far wall instead of dying over the table.

No pods
The cartridge model is good business and a bad deal. Any standard bottle screws straight into the head, ours or anyone else — we would rather earn the refill than lock you into it.

No plastic in the oil path
Oils are solvents. Against plastic they leach and off-gas. After a year a plastic diffuser smells faintly of every oil it has ever run. Ours is aluminium and glass end to end.
One machine, made to last
We did not make a range. We made the one we wanted and we made it properly. The 20 ml glass bottle screws into an anodised aluminium body, charges over USB-C, and shuts itself off after one, two or three hours. No tank, no cord you have to hide, no plastic anywhere the oil travels.

What we will not tell you
Temper does not purify your air. It will not treat, cure or prevent anything. Any antimicrobial effect essential oils have in a sealed laboratory does not survive contact with a real room and an open window.
Diffusing oil adds volatile compounds to a room rather than removing them — which is why we tell you to run it in cycles rather than all day, and to ventilate. What we sell is atmosphere. A room that feels like somewhere you want to be. That is a real thing, and it is enough.
Why every brand says hotel-lobby scent
Because it is true, and because most people have felt it — that moment walking into a lobby where the air is different. What they are smelling is cold-air nebulisation: undiluted oil atomised directly into the space, not diluted into water vapour. The commercial machines that do it cost thousands and are sized for a ballroom. Temper does the same thing for a living room. We say hotel-lobby scent because it is the most accurate shorthand, not because it sounds premium.
